The Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Pre-Raphaelite movements are closely aligned with László Ocskay ‘Doky’s abstract expressionist art and personality. An exceptionally well-educated artist who is also an ophthalmologist, with an interest in literature and classical music; his research into brain activity related to vision and visual perception is closely linked to his artistic methods. In his paintings, a flood of colour shapes the forms through which he is able to express his deep emotions, rooted in the subconscious. On his canvases, rich in colour, the pulsation of complementary contrasts becomes dynamic, or harmonious colour effects prevail.

His works are characterised by the phenomenon of horror vacui; in them, strictly symmetrical compositions are often disrupted, with shifts in proportion shaping the structures. He works with a brush, a palette knife and a roller, creating dynamic picture surfaces with dripped or scraped-back layers. For decades he has been painting his ‘Idols’, which, drawing on motifs rooted in Neolithic art, convey symbolic meanings. The totem- or tower-like, often winged forms, as well as world-tree-like figures, are organised into dual pairs linked to the ancient; masculine and feminine energies, and represent complementary concepts. They open a gateway between the celestial and the earthly, the transcendent and the human spheres, whilst also reinforcing a sense of identity.
