Natural Cohesion
2022. 04. 07. – 2022. 05. 01.
The collection in this exhibition illustrates how the traditional forms and contents present in peasant culture are reinterpreted within the context of contemporary perception.
The works of both artists, Barna and Levente are, respectively, steeped in local idiom – they are replete in associations to their land of origin, namely Transylvania. The mountains, landscapes, and the diverse rural motifs of the countryside inflect every aspect of their vision. From the Szekler symbols of Gyergyó to the recurring patterns found in items from Kalotaszeg, the wealth of indigenous materials – down to their barns and gates – are apparent in their works.
Regularly returning to their native landscape for inspiration, there is a noteworthy similarity in the creative attitudes of Barna and Levente. The two not only share a common love for their heritage but an overriding passion to transcend borders. Besides regularly traversing geographic boundaries, they have both seen fit to cross genres as well. While the painter, Barna, has recently moved onto carved forms, the sculptor, Levente, has projected his spatial concepts onto the form of two-dimensional images.
