multimedia textile exhibition of Zsanett Szirmayí
Sensory Yarn
2025. 06. 21. – 2025. 08. 29.

“Sensory Yarn” is Zsanett Szirmay’s multimedia textile installation, which allows tactile, haptic and acoustic perception in addition to the visual experience, by providing a multisensory experience. The title’s meaning is sensitive yarn. In English, “yarn” means not only yarn but also narration, which also refers to the term texture-text-textile, parallelly in Hungarian language as well in the words text-textiles. Fragments of Sándor Weöres’ poem cycle “Ragged Carpet” are echoed in the poetic textiles presented in the exhibition, but fragments of works by Shakespeare and other international writers can also be found in the graphic patterns.
The tonal layer of the printable textile pattern was created by machine embroidery, woven through with a special conductive thread by the artist. The embroidered characters are embossed in relief on the textile, helping to evoke tactile sensation. By touching the woven characters makes the sound of the text come to life.
In textile design and research Zsanett Szirmay explores the relationship between sound-image and human-material . Using traditional techniques, she creates experimental materials with a kind of modern-day alchemical approach to achieve “ars materia”. The “ars materia” is the elaboration of the final material, which opens up new paths in the field of textile art.
